Throughout the years I’ve taught almost every age group and people from a variety of backgrounds, I’m looking forward to learning about you too! I love watching movies but I especially horror. I also enjoy singing, reading, and sometimes writing. My favorite thing to do though is traveling! So far, I’ve been to 10 countries and 28 prefectures in Japan and I can’t wait to do more! I’m also a foodie and will try almost anything at least once. My main hobby these days is playing darts and learning about makeup on YouTube. I can’t wait to learn about your hobbies too!”

I love traveling. I have been to 50 countries so far. My dream is to visit every country one day. I love to experience new cultures so I can better understand the world and the people around me.
My hobbies are singing, playing the piano and baking. Although, it’s funny because I don’t like eating the baking so I just give it away to my friends and neighbours.

My main hobbies are reading, writing, and cosplay. I love stories, and bringing my favourite characters to life.

It’s a little embarrassing to admit, but I fell in love with Japan through manga, which exposed me to charming yet normal aspects of life here — such as women giving men chocolate on Valentine’s (Valentine’s gifts are given to both men and women in Canada!) and eating mandarin oranges at the kotatsu. Although I came to Japan because of manga and anime, I ended up staying for 3 years for the people. (And the food, haha!)

The NEW Eikaiwa Exchange Diary Course is exciting because it allows students and teachers to really get to know one another. I look forward to having many conversations with you!”

“Hello, my name is Ben. I am a New Zealander who has been living and teaching in Japan for the last ten years, mostly in Osaka. My wife and I have a two year old son and are expecting another boy in October 2021.

Prior to the pandemic, I was the preschool homeroom teacher at an IB World school, but I’ve also taught every age group, from elementary schoolers to adults. Actually, my first job in Japan was as a guest cooking instructor, teaching retirees how to make roast lamb and pavlova. I love to cook, eat and drink.

My other main hobby is playing Dungeons & Dragons and board games. I’ve been working on my own game, about dwarves mining in to a mountain, for the last few years; it’s a little like mahjong, with a stack of tiles you need to dig to the bottom of.

Whether you are interested in family, food, or nerdy things, I’m sure we’ll find something interesting to talk about!”

Mark Howell

“Hello! My name is Mark, and I am from southern California. I studied English-Creative Writing at California State University, Long Beach. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a teaching credential.

My hobbies range from general activities (reading, cycling, hiking, gardening and music), to the more specific (playing with our cats, researching word origins, and watching my favorite NHK TV programs).

After graduating from college I traveled to Guam to teach public school. After finishing my assignment I flew to Osaka to start a bicycle trek to Tokyo. On the way I visited the famous temples and castles in Kansai. I recall being captivated by the depth of history, and by so many cordial people I met. One day, in a train station, a man asked me if I would substitute teach for two weeks at his English school. I found that not only were my students eager to learn, but they also took me to karaoke bars every night after class. I went on to become a full-time instructor and began learning Japanese, studying Aikido and traveling around the country. In total I stayed six years in Japan. I lived in Ikeda, Nishinomiya and Kobe.

Four years ago I became an English language teacher again. At the SLK Learning Center I instructed students whose parents worked for Japanese companies in Los Angeles. I also taught several unique courses, like, “Survival English,” to many adults.

I am looking forward to hearing your story!”

I like growing vegetables, hiking, and sightseeing in Kyoto. I am also very interested in news and current affairs. I like to get my news from several different countries (New Zealand, Australia, Canada, America and the UK – as well as Japan, of course).

John Henwood

“Please to meet you. I’m 36 and from England. My interest in Japan began when I was a child and, I quickly moved here after graduating from university. That was almost ten years ago. Now I am happily married with two children, a girl and a boy. I don’t have much free time for myself. However, I have recently found that growing vegetables in my garden can be both fun and rewarding. I would welcome your advice as I’m already planning what to grow for next year.

Another interest of mine is introducing my family to UK classic rock music. I believe the oldies are the best. I love listening to the music of bands like The Beatles, The Eagles, and David Bowie. But my favorite has to be Queen. I’d love to hear what music you like, Japanese or foreign. As a teenager, I used to play the guitar in an amateur band, but now I just provide a backing rhythm when my daughter practices her piano.

I think writing a diary can be more than just improving your English. We have the opportunity to become lifelong friends. I’m looking forward to getting to know you.”

I met my Japanese wife in college. We moved to Nishinomiya City and I entered a Japanese company. After three years, I became the export manager for a meat-processing company in Seattle.
