“Hello! My name is Mark, and I am from southern California. I studied English-Creative Writing at California State University, Long Beach. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a teaching credential.
My hobbies range from general activities (reading, cycling, hiking, gardening and music), to the more specific (playing with our cats, researching word origins, and watching my favorite NHK TV programs).
After graduating from college I traveled to Guam to teach public school. After finishing my assignment I flew to Osaka to start a bicycle trek to Tokyo. On the way I visited the famous temples and castles in Kansai. I recall being captivated by the depth of history, and by so many cordial people I met. One day, in a train station, a man asked me if I would substitute teach for two weeks at his English school. I found that not only were my students eager to learn, but they also took me to karaoke bars every night after class. I went on to become a full-time instructor and began learning Japanese, studying Aikido and traveling around the country. In total I stayed six years in Japan. I lived in Ikeda, Nishinomiya and Kobe.
Four years ago I became an English language teacher again. At the SLK Learning Center I instructed students whose parents worked for Japanese companies in Los Angeles. I also taught several unique courses, like, “Survival English,” to many adults.
I am looking forward to hearing your story!”
